Important: Professional installation is recommended for some systems since their wiring and setup can be complicated.
If you have one of these systems, contact a local pro. Two stages of cooling and two or three stage furnace heating 2ġ Your system requires advanced configuration and wiring. Two stage heat pump with separate two stage furnace heating (Dual fuel) 1, 2 Two stage heat pump with or without AUX heat Single stage heat pump with separate two stage furnace heating (Dual fuel) 1 Single stage heat pump with separate single stage furnace heating (Dual fuel) 1 Single stage heat pump with or without AUX heat Two stages of heating with one stage of cooling Single stage heating with two stages of cooling Heat only or cool only C wire or Nest Power Connector required Heat only, cool only, or heat pump systems There are some key differences between Nest thermostats and what systems will work with each. You would not enter Rc in the checker, because it is only connected by a jumper. For instance, in the illustration on the right, you would only enter Rh, Y1, G and C wires into the checker. If your thermostat has a short “jumper” wire between two connectors, don’t include that wire. Only enter the labels for wires coming from inside your wall that are attached to the thermostat. So check R if there’s a wire of any color in your thermostat’s R connector. The label on the wire connector is what you should enter. This is because not all systems are connected to the thermostat with the same wire colors.įor instance, don’t enter R in the Compatibility Checker if you find a red wire, or W if you find a white wire. Simply enter which connectors have a wire and ignore the color of the wires. What to do if your thermostat’s wire connectors have two labels Refer to the following article for more information: It can be hard to determine which set of labels to use in the compatibility checker. If your thermostat’s connectors have two labels Make sure that the connector labels are readable. Save a picture of your current thermostat’s wires in case you need help later.

Contact a local pro and have them install a step down transformer to 20 - 30 V. In some cases, it’s possible that your system can be made Nest thermostat-compatible. High voltage systems, such as electric baseboard heaters, aren’t compatible with Nest thermostats. High voltage systems typically have a thermostat that is labeled 120 V or 240 V, and has two thick wires with wire nuts.

The method may depend on your local electrical code requirements. Note: If your wires are stranded, you may be able to contact a local pro to cap, solder or replace stranded wires with a solid core wire, which will work with the Nest thermostat. When you’re done, reinsert it into the correct connector. If there is more than one large strand, the wiring isn’t Nest-compatible. You may need to pull one out of the connector to check. Look closely at the end of one of the thermostat wires. If your thermostat’s wires are high voltage or stranded, then your system isn’t compatible. But, it’s possible that a trained professional can make your system compatible. If you have an older thermostat, there may be a mid-plate that also needs to be removed to expose the wires. Some covers simply pull off, while others need to be unscrewed. Tip: You can listen for your system to turn on, or put your hand near a vent to feel if there’s warm or cool air that comes through.
